Collection Bites – The Not So New World

Feb 6 1.15 – 2pm

Have you ever wanted to get closer to objects at the Museum, to handle them and hear their stories? Collection Bites, our new lunchtime talk series will let you do just that. Once a month we will be getting rid of the glass cases and bringing the objects to you.

Stephen Welsh, Curator of Living Cultures will lead the first session, revealing the stories and controversies behind rare and mysterious objects from South and Central America explaining how indigenous American culture was irreversibly changed and in some cases eradicated following the arrival of Europeans. Illustrated by objects from the collection, Stephen will discuss how cultural continuity amongst indigenous Americans combined with the preservation of their ancestral material culture and anthropological fieldwork has, over the past several centuries, revealed a wonderfully diverse distant American past.
